Born in Leicester, England in 1929, Stobart's early aptitude for creativity and flair for drawing persuaded his father to enroll him in Derby College of Art in 1946. He received a scholarship to London's prestigious Royal Academy Schools, and after graduation began sketching and painting passenger-cargo vessels in exotic ports of call after a voyage to South Africa to visit his father. He emigrated to Canada in 1957 and for the following 10 years painted for shipping companies along the St Lawrence River. Armed with several paintings Stobart headed for New York and it's galleries in 1965. He was offered a one-man show by the Wunderlich family who owned Kennedy Galleries. They encouraged Stobart to pursue his dream of recreating the American harbor scene in the days of the great clipper ships. Subsequent shows were sellouts! In 1976 he established his Martime Heriitage Prints, a limited edition publishing company, and in 1986 a format book displaying about 75 of his works was also published. To perpetuate traditional teaching of the fundamentals in drawing and painting, the artist established The Stobart Foundation for the purpose of awarding scholarships to qualified students. He continues painting historic ports and ships as well as contemporary outdoor subjects, and is rightly considered the pre-eminent maritime heritage artist.
