PRODUCTION CELS
Original production cels are colorful paintings on acetate, which were
individually created by hand by studio artists, then photographed and actually
used in a film or television program action sequence. Disney, Warner Bros and
other major studios offered these one-of-a-kind cels taken from more recent
feature films and television programs as well as those that survived from
vintage films and shorts.
Computerization came to the world of animation a couple
decades ago, and with it the virtual extinction of original,
hand painted celluloids (cels).

In the early days of animation, each frame was hand drawn,
then hand painted and outlines inked before being individually
photographed.  Even though there were 24 to 36 cels per
second of film, relatively few of these original production
drawings or cels remain. No real value was given to them then
and they were either reused or discarded. Those that have
survived are bought and sold on the secondary market with
pricing relative to popularity of the film, character, pose and
positioning, and, of course, condition of the artwork.
